You know, I'm from NY/NJ and we often used to drive past Amityville, LI on our way to my uncle's boat. It was always a fascination of mine so we drove past the house a couple of times. As a clinical hypnotherapist and a natural-born psychic, ghost and "scary movies" never had any impact on me - I usually laugh my way through them; I always seem to know what will happen next.
That being said, I LOVED the original movie. It was based on the book written shortly after the incident happened & I remember going to see it in the theater. Like "The Entity", that it was based on real situations was a huge fascination for me and I saw both movies multiple times trying to grasp the spiritual/metaphysical meanings. However, the original was definitely more "ghostly" & 'Hollywood' than the remake.
Because of my die-hard appreciation for the original, I waited a long time before seeing Ryan's remake. I had a hard time imagining that it would or could be as good as the original.
Let me tell you, it was better. First of all, the writer and director went back to the true roots of what really happened both in the house and on the land before the Lutz family moved in - not based off the book or movie, but back to the research of the true story. They researched real news clippings and interviewed both the original cop who showed up first on the scene as well as the medical examiner (part of the interviews are in the extras). This isn't a "Sixth Sense" ghost story - though you do get a grasp of the energies 'floating' around, it's the story of negative energy and how it can permeate your life if you allow it. Yes, they had to take dramatic license to tell the story but, between their re-creation of what really happened before and after the moved in, it is remarkably well done.
Even to this day, I actually think it was one of the best acting jobs I have ever seen Ryan portray - and better than most other people as well. He shows true depth of character and the psychological manifestation of shift is ever apparent and growing. I get chills every time I watch it.
If you like "killing bloody movies," I think you will truly enjoy this.
